The introduction of a smoke removal duct when constructing an electrically-heated home became obligatory on 1 September 2006 (order of 31 October 2005). This measure ensures that it is systematically possible to connect a wood appliance such as a fireplace in all homes subject to a building permit after this date.

Installations must be designed and fitted by a professional, a member of the CAPEB (Confederation of tradesmen and small construction firms) or the FFB (French Construction Federation) to ensure the safety and satisfaction of users. This professional will check that the installation complies with French regulations and the DTU (Unified Technical Document). The quality of the draught of the chimney duct is essential for proper operation and depends on the connection and characteristics of the duct. The installer must check these aspects and renovate as necessary.
