Wood fireplaces: ecological heating

Combating the greenhouse effect and wood heating:

Wood is a renewable energy. The CO2 released during combustion is identical to the CO2 which would be released into the atmosphere during natural degrading. In fact, when wood rots, it decomposes into C02 and methane, a greenhouse gas which is less known, but more powerful than CO2.

Using wood to heat saves fossil fuels. It is globally accepted that the use of gas, fuel oil or coal harms the environment and that reserves are running out. In the same way as these fuels, when wood burns, it releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, however the amount discharged is equivalent to that absorbed for the growth of the tree. CO2 is absorbed by young trees when wood is burnt. This transmission of carbon between the atmosphere and the biosphere is known as the carbon cycle.

Caring for and preserving the forests

In France, the forests are managed to ensure the sustainable development of tree covered areas. Areas of forest are managed to ensure access to paths for walking and the re-use of branches from chopped trees. In fact, wood left on-site after the use of a plot or the trimming of hedges is recovered for use in heating. This cleaning of plots also contributes to the prevention of fire risks.
